Readme file for UPGD706.EXE. Please Note: This upgrade is for the 56K Communicator ONLY (STI-FAX/56). It will NOT work with the 56K Communicator Pro w/SimpleJack, 56K Communicator w/SimpleJack, or the 56K Communicator Lite w/SimpleJack. This program is used for loading code into Simple Technology Modems; it requires the Windows operating system (Win 95 or Win NT) 1) Download UPGD706.EXE to a temporary directory (c:\temp for example). 2) Run the executable. This will expand the files needed to install the UPGRADE utility into the directory C:\V90TEMP. 3) From the C:\V90TEMP directory run SETUP.EXE. When asked, DO NOT CHANGE THE DIRECTORY LOCATIONS. Upon completion files will have been installed in a directory C:\UPGRADE, and subdirectories FIRMWARE, LOADERS, and CELPHONE. 4) From C:\V90TEMP run the file FIRMWARE.EXE. 5) The upgrade utility is started by running UPGRADE.EXE either from the icon under \Programs\Firmware Upgrade Program or from C:\UPGRADE\UPGRADE.EXE 6) When prompted, select the code to be loaded. The codes appropriate for your modem will be displayed in the righthand selection box. 28.8Kbps modems may be upgraded to 33.6Kbps and vice versa. 56Kbps modems currently support the K56flex protocol OR the V.90 protocol. K65flex codes end in the '.K56' extension and V.90 end with the '.V90' extension. Select the desired version by clicking on it. If you don't have a cell phone cable kit, proceed to step 7. 7) If you have a cell phone cable kit and have installed the drivers properly, you will see a list of supported cell phones on the left hand side of the screen. Select the appropriate one by clicking on it. Note: V.90 DOES NOT SUPPORT CELL PHONES AT THIS TIME. 8) Click on 'LOAD DRIVER' to begin the code modification process. !!! IMPORTANT NOTICE !!! DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, REMOVE THE MODEM OR SHUT OFF THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPGRADE IS IN PROCESS. DOING SO MAY PERMANENTLY DAMAGE THE MODEM. 9) After completion you may delete the C:\V90TEMP directory. 10) Now that the modem has been reprogrammed with the V.90 code, your system needs to recognize the modem with the correct drivers. Close down the upgrade utility and go to the control panel. Next click on modems and highlight and remove the "Simple Technology 56K Communicator". Now remove the modem from the PC-CARD slot. Wait about 10 seconds and then plug it back in to the computer. A message should appear saying New Hardware Found "Simple Technology V.90 Communicator". Depending on the version of windows you have, you will need to specify the location of the new drivers. These drivers are located in the c:\upgrade\firmware directory. 11) Internet users that connect with dial-up networking will need to change the connection to specify the correct modem. To do this click on "My Computer" then click on dial-up networking. This will show the connection icons that have been created for your internet service providers. Highlight the one in question and then go to file and pull down to properties. Down at the bottom it will read "connect using", this will need to be changed to Simple Technology V.90 Communicator. After this is done you are now ready to connect at the new V.90 standard. You may need to verify that your internet service provider has upgraded to this standard. If they have not done so, and are at one of the previous standards (KFLEX or X2) then the connection is limited to V.34 and/or 33.6BPS. 12) To verify that the modem has been upgraded to V.90, a test can be run to see the code version. Go to control panel and double click on modems. This will show the current modems installed in your computer system. Next go to diagnostics tab at the top. This will show which comm port the modem is assigned to. Hightlight this port and click on "More Info". After a few seconds a screen will come up and show the properties of the modem. At the bottom of the screen the diagnostic will show a series of ATI commands from 1-7. The one in question is the ATI3 command. The response should read as follows: V.90 CODE = V2.083A_US-K56_DLL KFLEX CODE = V1.200A_US-K56_DLL 13) Any questions or problems, please contact Simple Technology's Technical Support Department.
